Bruxism / Teeth Grinding Treatment
Bruxism is a common behaviour affecting 8-31% of the general population. It is excessive grinding of the teeth, awake or when asleep, resulting in tooth hypersensitivity, aching jaw muscles, head and neck aches and longterm tooth damage.
The cause for bruxism is complex and related to many medical issues that need to be excluded or investigated for before we treat and may include seeing a dentist also.
In conjunction with the above methods, weakening the masseter muscles using prescription medication may help. These are adjunctive to dental treatment such as an occlusal splint (mouth guard) at night while asleep as bruxism will continue to damage teeth, but medication treatment will help decrease the severity, and provide relief for related symptoms- head and neck pain, jaw pain and more.
